Position paper on tonsillectomy and adenotonsillectomy in children
A working group of paediatric ENT surgeons and paediatricians have released a position paper recommending an urgent need to prioritise operations to remove young children’s tonsils and adenoids to help correct disrupted sleep caused from upper airway narrowing. Based on research that obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a significant airway obstruction causing fragmented sleep, which, when severe, results in developmental delay, growth problems and heart failure, the group strongly recommend that priority be given to children needing the operation.
