Dysphagia is an important problem that affects patients in a number of medical and surgical disciplines including ENT, gastroenterology, neurology and respiratory medicine. Causes of dysphagia can include head and neck cancer and its treatment, neurological disease, and intrinsic pathology in the pharynx and esophagus. Typically an interdisciplinary approach is required to diagnose and treat underlying causes, rehabilitate or repair swallowing mechanisms, prevent aspiration pneumonia and ensure adequate nutrition.
