OHNS Surgical Education & Training Requirements

These requirements must be completed by the end of each SET year except where indicated.

By the end of SET 1

  • Satisfactorily complete 4 x 3 month clinical training rotations in OHNS accredited positions as allocated by the Board (from 2011)
  • Satisfactorily complete the ASSET Course (may be completed earlier)
  • Satisfactorily complete the CCrISP Course (may be completed earlier)

 

Forms to be submitted at the end of each 3 month rotation during SET 1:

  • OHNS End of Term Assessment Form
  • OHNS Logbook Coversheet
  • Logbook Summary Form (specific to the specialty appointed to for that rotation)
  • Mini CEX (minimum of 1)
  • DOPs (minimum of 1)
  • Accumulative Leave Form

 

By the end of SET 2

  • Satisfactorily complete 2 x 6 month clinical training rotations in OHNS accredited positions as allocated by the Board
  • Satisfactorily complete the RACS Generic Surgical Science Examination (may be completed in SET 1)
  • Satisfactorily complete the RACS Surgical Science Examination in OHNS (may be completed in SET 1)
  • Satisfactorily complete the RACS Clinical Examination (may be completed in SET 1)
  • Satisfactorily complete the EMST Course (may be completed earlier)
  • Attend the Robert Guerin Memorial Trainee Conference

 

Forms to be submitted at the end of each 6 month rotation during SET 2:

  • OHNS End of Term Assessment Form
  • Logbook Summary Form
  • Accumulative Leave Form

 

By the end of SET 3

  • Satisfactorily complete 2 x 6 month clinical training rotations in OHNS accredited positions as allocated by the Board
  • Satisfactorily complete 60 documented Temporal Bone procedures by June 30 of SET 3
  • Attend the Robert Guerin Memorial Trainee Conference

 

Forms to be submitted at the end of each 6 month rotation during SET 3:

  • OHNS End of Term Assessment Form
  • Logbook Summary Form
  • Accumulative Leave Form

 

By the end of SET 4

  • Satisfactorily complete 2 x 6 month clinical training rotations in OHNS accredited positions as allocated by the Board
  • Attend the Robert Guerin Memorial Trainee Conference
  • Satisfactorily complete a Tympanoplasty Audit by June 30 of SET 4

 

Forms to be submitted at the end of each 6 month rotation during SET 4:

  • OHNS End of Term Assessment Form
  • Logbook Summary Form
  • Accumulative Leave Form

 

By the end of SET 5

  • Satisfactorily complete 2 x 6 month clinical training rotations in OHNS accredited positions as allocated by the Board
  • Have a minimum of 6 months exposure to Paediatric Otolaryngology
  • Have a minimum of 6 months exposure to Head and Neck Surgery
  • Attend the Robert Guerin Memorial Trainee Conference (unless already passed the RACS Fellowship examination)
  • Satisfactorily complete the RACS Fellowship Examination in OHNS (may be sat in the second part of SET 4)

 

Forms to be submitted at the end of each 6 month rotation during SET 5:

  • OHNS End of Term Assessment Form
  • Logbook Summary Form
  • Accumulative Leave Form


Prior to sitting the RACS Fellowship Examination

  • Satisfactorily complete 2 Temporal Bone courses
  • Satisfactorily complete an Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) course
  • Satisfactorily complete a Head and Neck course
  • Satisfactorily complete an approved research investigation project (during SET 2 – SET 5)
  • Attend a minimum of 3 ASOHNS or NZSOHNS Annual Scientific Meetings (during SET 2 – SET 5)
  • Satisfactorily undertake S1 + S2 + S3 totals of 300 A and 300 B procedures
