Surgical Education & Training in Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery (OHNS)

The Australian Society of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery together with the New Zealand Society of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons supervises a program of surgical education and training in OHNS. The program is conducted over a minimum of five years and it includes compulsory six-month rotations in paediatric and head and neck surgery.

The program is aimed at providing surgical education and training in OHNS to a standard that enables the trainee to pass the Fellowship examination of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. This then qualifies a person for either Ordinary Membership of the Australian Society of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery or the New Zealand Society of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery.

Appointments to the program are made on an annual basis. Advancement is dependent on satisfactory progress each year. Specialist Surgical Trainees must be prepared to be assigned to a unit anywhere in Australia. A pathway exists for combining specialist surgical training with a PhD or MS at an Australian University. This program is conducted over an extended period depending on the research undertaken. Applications for the Surgeon-Scientist program can only be made once a place on the specialist surgical training program has been offered.

The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons places a general advertisement in the Medical Journal of Australia in February and March each year for those interested in applying to the OHNS training program.
